Which Months Have the Most Alcohol-Related Crashes in Arizona?

November and December have the highest average daily crash counts across six years of Arizona reports—not just a single year's results.

November averaged 15.4 alcohol-related crashes per day from 2019 through 2024, the highest of any month. December followed at 15.2 per day. The lowest was April (13.9 per day).

What stands out

November led the six-year comparison. ADOT recorded 2,766 alcohol-related crashes across six Novembers—15.4 per calendar day.

December was close behind. Its 2,822 crashes across six Decembers averaged 15.2 per day. December had more crashes in total, but also has more days than November.

April was lowest on a per-day basis. ADOT recorded 2,501 crashes across six Aprils, or 13.9 per day. This measure adjusts for month length, not traffic volume.

Monthly averages do not isolate holiday effects. A high November average cannot establish the number of crashes on Thanksgiving itself. To compare specific holidays reliably, we would need dated crash counts, not monthly aggregates.

These figures measure reported alcohol-related crashes, not DUI arrests or an individual driver's risk. The six-year period includes 2020, when travel patterns changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results are descriptive, not traffic-volume-adjusted rates.

Monthly counts, sources and methodology

We transcribed each year's twelve monthly totals and checked that each set sums to the published annual alcohol-related crash total. Together they represent 31,803 crashes. For each month, we summed crashes across the six years and divided by the total number of that month's calendar days across the same years.

ADOT labels these crashes alcohol-related when an investigating officer indicates alcohol consumption was involved. This does not establish legal intoxication or a criminal DUI conviction.
